QV#74 James Murray: The Feldenkrais Method, Healing Through Movement, Improving Alignment

Um, what were you saying?
J
47:02James MurrayGUEST
No, I think I've finished what I was saying, but just like what separates us from the animals is this innate ability to rotate about a point, our instability, and the rotating about a point can be shown in rolling down a hill.
J
47:15James MurrayGUEST
And you know, there's other things too, like we can touch our fingers to our thumbs, but squirrels can do that too, to some degree.
J
47:23James MurrayGUEST
And that skill is somewhat there in other species, gorillas and chimpanzees and stuff.
J
47:32James MurrayGUEST
Ultimately, as human beings, everything that we do as adults today, we had to undergo a long apprenticeship of learning.
J
47:45James MurrayGUEST
Although it's becoming apparent now watching documentaries of David Attenborough that even the animals have to learn more than what they thought.

And that's why we're launching our consultation today about implementing some changes, which will mean that.
James MurrayGUEST
vapes and vaping products can no longer be targeted and promoted to young people.
James MurrayGUEST
And what this involves is things like removing the colourful packaging, putting it in just plain white packaging with text on it, making sure the vapes themselves are not colourful, they're just black or white or grey.
James MurrayGUEST
and removing the promotion from the front of the counter so it's behind the counter in the way that cigarettes are where at the moment if you're buying a pack of cigarettes you have to ask the shopkeeper to get it for you making it more equivalent to that and as you as you said Nick you know there's about a million 11 to 17 year olds last year tried vaping you know it's not good for kids to be addicted to nicotine it has a real impact on them and we think this is a really important way of making sure they're not promoted to young people.

Um, and I think, you know, one thing I would say about this transition is how smoothly it is going because I think all of us in the Parliamentary Labor Party, there's a great sense of gratitude, um, to Keir for what he did to change our party before the last general election to help us win, uh, that big landslide in the last general election, to set some of the foundations, uh, that he's done under his government over the last two years.

Well, look, I, I, I hope people would see that I've always been respectful of different views o- on this topic, as with others.
James MurrayGUEST
the way I approach things when people have different views, um, is to be respectful and to listen to people's views on this.

There's been some work which has been done already to reduce the rates of business rates that apply to high street premises.
James MurrayGUEST
It's a broader point around the transition that we're going through as a Labour Party and as a government right now in that I think across the Labour Party we have huge gratitude for what Keir did in terms of winning the last election, laying foundations in the first two years.

Why, why the need then from a maternity commissioner? What do they need to achieve? Good morning.
James MurrayGUEST
Um, look, I think we know that for far too long, uh, women, um, and babies and their families have been let down by NHS maternity and neonatal services.
James MurrayGUEST
And one of the things I've heard from families who I've met, um, is about women not being listened to, about women's concerns, um, their voices, uh, not being, not being heard, not being acted upon.
James MurrayGUEST
Um, and the step that we're announcing today, accepting, uh, the, uh, principle of a neonatal-- a maternity and neonatal commissioner that Baroness Amos has, has referred to in her report, uh, that will help make sure that women's voices are heard in government when decisions are being taken.

If you look at issues such as was dealt with recently in Nottinghamshire, why would you imagine Secretary of State we're getting it so badly wrong in such a key area?
