this is 2023 and so the next opportunity was uh late february 2024 for me and uh i reached out to leor i said i have no money i don't know how we're gonna do it but we're making this film we found an amazing fixer person who can help us find people on the ground and it came together very very um you know fast uh we were i was i started production i think late january 2024 i was on the ground late february early march and we filmed for a month on the roads and i wanted the film to be very sort of visceral i wanted everything to be filmed on the roads a lot of films about um about the seventh that were coming out around that time, you know, chose a studio or somebody's house or something like that, mostly talking heads, people giving their testimony about what happened and using Hamas's footage and things along those lines.
5:46
And initially I wanted something different.
5:49
So every interview except for one takes place on the road itself.
5:53
I wanted you sort of, as a viewer, to understand what happened, to feel the road, to feel that tension.
5:59
And that's sort of how the film came about.
6:01
And then I returned to Canada and made the decision that I was going to release the film for free.

Anyway, so I just want to know, what was the most surprising thing you learned about October 7th as a result of filming?
5:01
yes.
5:02
Yeah, and so every time they would walk around the kibbutz, you know, the kibbutz elders would ask them, who do you belong to? And so, yeah, and so they created this group, and for many years, you know, the group was a fun group, where they shared simchas, where, you know, they would text each other, hey, you're coming over for a cup of coffee.
5:22
They all lived around the same area in Kibbutz Kfar Azzah.
5:26
And so when the seventh hit, the only lines of communications they had was this WhatsApp group.
5:37
And so the whatsapp group you have a living sort of document of of what's happening minute by minute as the terrorists you know uh breach the border and enter kibbutz khwaraza and begin murdering people and you you really get a sense of their their worries the the tragedy and things along those lines so When Dutton found that out and we started talking, I told him, look, I really want to do a movie about the seventh.
6:06
I just, I'm not there, but I really want to do something.
6:10
So he, he, you know, he mentioned that and I said, That's perfect.
