So the big question is, how does one measure what one values, and how can those measures be made comparable so that they're useful for government purposes?

Well, I think that, uh, in the world at the moment, we're going through a massive experiment relating to the consequences of what happens if we don't get a move on and do this quickly.

And, and, and when I say that, I, I'm talking about the rise of a particular kind of divisive popular, uh, nationalism across the, across the world.

And in this situation, I think we...

If we take seriously the idea that prosperity is about living well together, then we have to measure, uh, things beyond financial gain to include those things which are, which are about living well together.

So those are the dimensions of life that sustain it and give meaning to it.

So this is about care and belonging, dignity, security, and social cohesion, but it's also about democratic voice, and this is what we do in the prosperity, um, index in the Institute.

Do you think there's anything that can be done to get a better alignment between business does and is incentivized to do and what we really value as individuals and societies?

So the first question about research for you then is, if you had a million pounds to personally spend on a research project, what would it be?

How would you spend it? Well, if I had a million pounds right now, I think what I'd be doing is choosing one particular part of the UK.

and getting together these big transdisciplinary teams that I work with and working out why it's so impossible for the government to get all the relevant bits moving at the same time in the right direction to improve the quality of people's lives.

It's actually not that difficult, but it does require local coordination.

And that's the thing that governments are not very good at.

So when you talk about coordination, the coordination of what bits? If you can imagine the kind of thing that governments normally do with traffic, this gives you a good idea of why they can't run the economy.
