Happy Endings

Due to the generic way we use language though, a framing device may not actually involve a device, it may just be used to describe the overall context of a concept.

For example, the sitcom Happy Endings was about a couple in a friendship group who split up and how the rest of the friends then maneuver around this bitter breakup.

That's the frame we understand the show in rather than a general group of friends style sitcom.

So I've said this a lot now and I'll probably even have to say it again in the conclusion section, but reasoning and intention of the effect of framing devices could ensure that they work effectively.

If the princess bride grandson interrupted too much, it could slow everything down and be frustrating for the audience.

He's no longer an empathetic conduit, but an annoyance.

And indeed, with the aforementioned happy endings, evidently the breakup element became too awkward or limiting to maintain, so eventually all of the characters got over it and it did become more of a general group of friends sitcom, but fortunately with its own distinctive style of humour.

This can show that sometimes a framing device can become a nuisance or might be used as an initial hook, but it's always the underlying writing, characters and story which matter most.

It's also been called one of the greatest comedies that has been shown in a really, really long time.

I think if you love those funny kind of friendship shows, you know, like Friends or Six Lives of College Girls or Happy Endings or any kind of show like that, you will absolutely love Adults.

The casting, the storylines...

The things that they come up with are so relatable and I genuinely have not laughed out loud more at a show than when I watch this show.

from being a child watching the TV show Friends or Seinfeld.

And then as a young adult watching Happy Endings and now there's a new show called Adults.

That is like this friend group vibe that like my heart like longs for.

And yet I have friends in real life that I don't always bring, you know, I can always notice how that's funnier, that's more interesting.

There's work stories and there's relationship stories and just the kind of weird sitcom things that tend to happen in shows like this.

I have to say, I feel like stylistically to me, it feels a little bit more like a show like Happy Endings or even Almost Sunny than it does something like Girls, if that gives you a little bit of a barometer for what kind of show that you're going to be watching.

experiencing and if you missed the first season I think it's quite strong you should go back and check it out but if you don't if you just want to jump in if you're like I'm ready for some TV right now it's actually a better than usual time than it might be to jump in on a second season because as we're going to talk about they did not just pick up with season 2 the creators went back and wrote a different pilot, sort of, to jump into this show.

So we're going to talk about that and all of the rest of this amongst ourselves and then also with Ben and Rebecca in a little bit.
