And why does the federal government say they want this information?

That's actually part of the issue is they haven't explicitly said why they want this information, which is part of the reason the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals shot this appeal effort from the Department of Justice down.

There is a federal requirement that when the government, the federal government specifically, asks for big information like this from the state... that includes private information.

They have to explicitly say what they're doing with it, how they're going to store it, and why they want it.

The DOJ still officially has not given that information out at all.

Our best guess is that they are establishing some sort of national voter file, or maybe they are looking at these to compare citizenship records with who is voting.

But the process of doing that is so complex and so difficult to do that there's a reason that the states largely manage their own voter rolls.
