Give us your thoughts 25 years later, following the 9-11 terror attacks on the United States.
23:30
First of all, I don't think everyone recalls that the initial attack on America was designed for an attack on the East Coast and the West Coast.
23:40
And the West Coast attack was being run out of San Diego.
23:44
a few days before nine 11, there was some problems implementing that part of the plan.
23:49
And so that was dropped.
23:51
So I get a call at six 30 in the morning and that a plane had flown into the world trade center.
23:56
And my first instinct said, well, that's gotta be an accident or a mistake.

7 MINS LATER

31:21
Give us your thoughts about those in public service, the first responders who we remember today.
22:48
And then all of a sudden, like on a dime, the world changed for everyone and never went back.
22:58
I couldn't say it better.
22:59
I got a call at 6.30 in the morning and the emergency services director was saying there was an attack on the World Trade Center.
23:07
And at first I thought he meant the World Trade Center in Long Beach.
23:09
But when I turned on my television, I could see that he was talking about the World Trade Center in New York.
23:14
By the time I tuned in, a second plane was flying into the World Trade Center.
23:21
This is a solemn day.
28:16
How difficult on that day was it for you as governor of California to get information from the federal government?
24:15
By the time I tuned in, a second plane was flying into the World Trade Center
24:20
CenterUm, this is a solemn day.
24:22
My heart goes out to all the families who lost people, not just on the flights, John, and there were four flights all coming to California because the terrorists wanted to take advantage of all the fuel on those flights and make sure after they hit their targets, the, the rest of the buildings would, uh, burn down.
24:41
Also, 100 Californians lost their lives in those days, and my heart goes out to their family, and I think we owe them the same debt of gratitude we do any person who fought in a war for us because they literally gave their lives to us, particularly, uh, those on Flight 93.
24:58
93 was the last flight to take off.
25:01
It was 42 minutes late.
25:03
There were 38 phones on that, uh, uh, plane, you, uh, the ba- uh, you know, the back of the, your seat.
26:10
So I would imagine that as, as governor of California at that time, when you had all four planes that were destined for California, and reports that there could've been a fifth hijacked plane, uh, that was something that was extremely acute for you, the highway patrol, your staff, everyone in Sacramento.
