So I then had lots of s- pe- lots, lots of valves and I made ra- crystal radios and crystal radios with valves, and then eventually I made a valve radio.

And, uh, amateur radio came in in a very strange way because I, uh, got a, a, a, an ordinary wireless and the medium wave had got... somebody touched it, and medium wave stops at 200 meters in, in, in this part of the world, but we have 160 meter band as an amateur.

So I found the 160 meter band just, uh, a little bit down beyond the end of the dial, or at the end of the dial, and I realized amateur radio.

So I listened for a while, and then eventually I realized that one of the guys who was a, a local amateur, G3KEP, who'd been licensed three or four years earlier, uh, I was at school with him.

And, uh, there was a radio club at the school, so I joined the radio club at the school.
