O-line, D-line, what really popped for you when it comes to that Bills tape against the Texans?

The biggest thing for me that popped was the pass protection plan that they had, and the way they varied it all game long.

And I think Josh gave a little bit of a tell when he said Austin had a good plan.

Well, there's only one Austin on that coaching staff, and that's the, that's Austin Gunn, who's the assistant offensive line coach.

So when you, when you think about this, this protection scheme they came up with, it must have been him, and of course the others chipped in, but the thing you can't do with elite pass rushers is what the Bills did the last three times they played them, which is do the same thing over and over again.

Great ones pattern protections, they pattern movements, and they're able to beat you at will after a while.

This was totally different.

What were your impressions of, of him on tape?

Yep.

And, and what better place for a defense to have a weakness than over top of this right guard and center where that whole thing can get collapsed down and we can get James Cook back behind it.

If you remember the big touchdown run that he had last season against the Houston Texans was spit back over that right side behind Osiris Torrance.

Um, now Jackson Halls made an unbelievable athletic play on the second level to, to spring him, but still, that's where they like to go.

So it's good that that's there.

I think this whole Bills thing, if you watch that game from last year, Joe, early on they were fine.

You know, Spencer might've got beat here and there, but they were doing okay, and it wasn't like it was just complete jailbreak.

Yeah

Like, where, where are you at on these two dudes based on where the narratives have been this off-season, what you've seen throughout camp and pre-season, what's your confidence level in these guys being able to play at the level we know they can?

I think obviously throughout their careers, one of the best tackle tandems in the league, right? I mean, and you've got two different styles, almost like a thunder and lightning kind of thing going on.

And, uh, the funny thing is, is, you know, you got, you got, um, Dion on one side, who's unorthodox, is all get out.

Um, you're not gonna take his film to clinic and teach anybody what he does.

It's his own set of rules, and it, it works for him.

And you got Spencer on the other side, Spencer Brown, who's picture perfect.

I mean, this is clinic film.

Yeah.

But hopefully we can be spared from that.

that.I think so.

I think the biggest thing, you talk about the defense being ahead of the offense.

I think one thing about this Bills team is we expect the offense to not have any drop-off.

If anything, they should be better because of DJ Moore.

Maybe we got Keon, Keon Coleman another, you know, year of maturity.

We've got people in place that we know.

Yeah.

We have to know what led to this.

And it's so awesome to be on this board or this panel with all these esteemed content creators and reporters, people out there that love this franchise, love this football team and know an incredible amount about the Buffalo Bills.

And I've been asked by Joe Marino.

He was a little bit shocked.

So what do we make of this Bills depth addition, their post-draft, uh, supplementation of their defensive front?

Uh, I think part of this is probably maybe we don't know something about Michael Hoyt that maybe the franchise knows, and this is a guy that can come in and be a stopgap.

If you're really relying on Javon Solomon to be that special teams guy, and you think maybe this guy replaces him, the special teams snaps aren't there.

He doesn't, doesn't play a ton of teams.

I think he had 63 last year, 48, 65 before that.

His highest team snaps in a season were 75.

I mean, they're there, but they're not immense.

Oh, for sure.

[laughs] Well-

I, I will tell you this, and this is the way I look at pass rush.

If I'm a pitcher and I'm throwing you fastball after fastball after fastball, you're gonna eventually time it up and barrel that ball up, and probably hit it over the wall, right? But if I bring you a fastball, and then I break you off with a curve ball or a slider and keep you on your toes, all of a sudden things are different, and that fastball gets a lot faster because I'm throwing you curves and sliders.

And I look at pass rush the same exact way, and I think the great pass rushers throughout the history of the league have had the ability to study who they go against and be able to have a repertoire or a cachet of moves and, and weaponry against those offensive tackles to win at a high rate.

And I think it's important that we bring in multifaceted pass rushers.

We do have a lot of compression style rushers, but I also think we have some compression style rushers that can do some different things.

We just haven't unlocked those yet because they were always told how they had to rush in this last system.

What's your favorite part about what O'Cyrus Torrence brings to this football team?

Going back to what you said a little bit ago, before I get into that, you are correct.

There's a lot of layers to this.

There's a lot of layers to this.

That's why if this gets done, I need to get it done this year, not next year, and we'll talk about that in a little bit.

My favorite part about O'Cyrus Torrence is two things.

One is what you've already talked about, his availability.

Gerry, when you watch O'Cyrus Torrence, what are some of the areas that you look at and say you'd like to see some improvement?

What's your overall vibe on just the leadership structure that you're expecting under Joe Brady?

I mean, just 'cause you're a captain doesn't make you the team leader.

I mean, obviously there's some positions that automatically get the C, being quarterback, right? If you got a quarterback that's viable, that's been there a while, he's gonna get the captaincy.

That's how it's always been.

When I played, it was always three captains.

Actually, it was four.

You had a offense, a defense, a special teams captain, and then you had a, a floater captain.
