Practically speaking, how do you think about that journey from starting to learn Welsh to becoming fluent enough in Welsh to then lecture in a university? Characterise that for us.

Yes, it was easier at that stage because one had more time, but I do like the metaphor when you're learning a language of a rocket taking off into space in the sense that if you have the energy and the time to really go very intensively at the beginning, You can get to a sort of working knowledge, which to me is, you know, getting out of the Earth's atmosphere, as it were, and then you can float forward with boosters as and when, over the years and over the decades.

And that's what I was able to do with Welsh.

So I did, first of all, a summer school in Wales, in Lampeter, in the middle of rural Wales, and that was an intensive taught course.

But then I was also working myself, systematically building up my vocabulary.
