How did you go from playing to getting into coaching?
2:31
Well, that's a good question.
2:33
I was, I finished my career, my college career at LaSalle in 1970, graduated May of 70.
2:39
And then I was drafted in the United States Army and I went in in October of 70.
2:47
I spent, you know, part of my, my first duty was basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and then went on to Fort Ord, California to shoot 81 millimeter mortars.
2:59
And, and then I, at the end of my, my, what they call my advanced infantry duty, they were, I was going to get orders to go to Vietnam or Germany.
3:13
I wasn't sure which.

He was in there just, you know, yucking it up with anybody who wanted to say hi, you know, you know, spending the time, but yeah, he would be a, he'd be a fun guy to be out in the foursome with for sure.

So can you talk more about how your approach differed between building something from the ground up with Penn versus stepping into a program that has experienced a lot of success at the time when you, when you stepped into Temple?
6:23
Well, the, the reality was that, that Penn, Penn is a pretty historic program as well.
6:27
So they-- Before I got the opportunity to coach at Penn, Jack McCloskey, who was a, a phenomenal general manager for the Detroit Pistons, he was the coach at Penn, Dick Harter, Chuck Daly, uh, Bob Weinauer, all of these guys, they could've stayed for years longer than they did at the University of Pennsylvania and be high-- been highly successful.
6:47
I, I just was at a time where th-they hadn't had great success right before it, so I was, I was in a, a-- I was in a good position in some ways.
6:56
You know, we were-- we had a chance to grow and, and get better, and we did.
7:00
And I'm grateful, again, grateful for that because of all the players that played for me and the coaches that coached with me.
7:05
And when I got to Temple, when they asked me to be interested in the job at Temple, I, I would had some trepidation, you know? It was, it was a different program with different missions.

So I think those are great ideas that the rest of the SBL community can learn from.
