And can you give me some examples, maybe Fidelma, of clinical trials that you've been involved in? What kind of questions are you looking to answer?
2:56
So my area of interest in particular has been diabetes and pregnancy, and there are three areas that I've been involved in, I think, that have really shaped and changed how we deliver care to patients.
3:09
So the first was the concept trial, and we in Galway were a site-level activity for a multinational site, for a multinational trial, and that was investigating whether CGMS, that's continuous glucose monitoring, versus fingerprint monitoring would give better outcomes to pregnant women with type 1 diabetes and for the reasons.
3:32
And of course, it did show that it was more effective.
3:36
It decreased morbidities and neonatal unit care, which is a costly component of health care.
3:42
Mm-hmm.
3:43
And now continuous glucose monitoring using these devices are the norm and the standard of care for all women with type 1 diabetes.

The landscape is good, but we need the support of government, obviously, and of our institutions to weigh in behind that and really add momentum to it to help us to make a very big leap forward.

So tell us, I think the audience would be interested to kind of get an idea of if you believe something's important to research, how do you go about it? How do you go about accessing that funding? How do you go about deciding which trial it is that you think would be best to answer that question?
24:21
Okay, so as you framed it already, there's lots of ways in doing, uh, clinical research, uh, and they all give you valuable information.
24:29
So you can have your randomized control trial.
24:31
That's probably the highest level of evidence you're going to look for.
24:34
They're costly to do, and they're, uh, very rigorous because you have to fulfill lots of regulatory pathways.
24:41
But you can do observation studies, cohort studies.
24:44
And what's gaining momentum now is real world data, which we can gather from databases, from electronic patient records and so forth.
