like a lot of big families at that stage, me and my mother and father, when they were married, lived in me granny's house.

my paternal grannies in Wilton Street, but I was actually born in Linewood Street in my other grannies, my mother's mother, because my mother wanted, I think she was living in Wilton Street with my dad at the time, but I think she wanted me born, I think because I was the first born, she wanted me born in Linewood Street.

So she let on she was going up to her mother, knowing that she was going to have me that night, And then for the first number of years we were staying in my uncle's house, my auntie's house.

But we eventually got our new house, New Bulls in Lonemoor Road, which is sort of overlooking the Brandywild football pitch.

Growing up in the Brandywale of those days, nobody had anything.

You know, the usual old sob story, as people would say, that nobody had anything.

So you kind of improved while you were managing Derry City? Yeah,

while I was managing Coleraine.

And managing Corian was great.

Managing Corian was great.

And I had a really, really good side.

And if I had stayed, I think even they agreed, if I had stayed, we probably would have won the league.

But...

What was that like, the play for Northern Ireland?

Well,

Portfield was, you know what, it all just happened so quick, Richard, where all of a sudden you're playing against, you know, I signed Edwin Harps.

And I think I might have played seven games.

Two of them were against Everton in the UEFA Cup.

And I was playing against Everton at Goodison Park.

And the following week, I was sitting in England, having signed for Port Vale.

And it was crazy.

Right.

So that would have had an impact on you and the lads as players then, wouldn't it? You came into a team that wasn't ready

to be the force in the Premier Division.

I think Noel Kinger had made a mistake in that any team he could have got together could have won the First Division.

But you should have put a team together that was capable of challenging the Premier Division instead of putting together a team that was going to win the First Division.

Right.

Because the team that was going to win the First Division, you could have won the First Division, you know, putting down the reserve team.

The First Division was that bad at the time.

Was it? The pressure

Yeah.
