Season 3, Ep. 28: Negotiating Your Way Back To Your Authentic Self After Losing Yourself in a Toxic Relationship

And once they're out, they realize, okay, person i was in relation to this other person in the relationship now that's fallen away and i am no longer the person that i was when i initially went in to the relationship right this very confident person who's got self-esteem so now this happened to me as well so you have to like rebuild so what are some of the things that people have to do when they are with someone in order to negotiate their real self back into place

Eva MinkoffGUEST
That's actually something I tend to do very frequently is compare professional relationships to romantic relationships, demonstrating that other than the, you know, sort of the obvious, they're the same because it's relationship between two humans.

Eva MinkoffGUEST
What do all solid, effective relationships require? So no surprise, I see it as the first being your relationship with yourself, because how are you going to be able to approach another person and see them for who they are and what it is they want if you don't know what you want and where you're coming from? So I do have three steps, if you will, to do that.

So talk a little bit about how can people navigate that when they're doing the work, but the fear still kind of dances around like the edges.

So for those who aren't familiar with that concept or haven't read the article yet, just tell us more about that.

Eva MinkoffGUEST
Well, just a little bit of background aside from the As I said, a collective experience that I've had.

Eva MinkoffGUEST
I gave a TED Talk in 2020 called Five Minutes to Fix Our Broken Healthcare System, which is, I know, a very bold title.

Eva MinkoffGUEST
But the essence was about human connection, doctor-patient relationships, and that in essentially five minutes or much less, maybe five seconds, you can make or break connection, trust.

Eva MinkoffGUEST
In a doctor-patient relationship, I could give many examples of how a doctor, for instance, can completely change your relationship and actually we'll talk about that a little bit in seconds by just saying something like i believe you especially if it's an invisible pain for the most part which i have but i felt like there was something missing in my talk that i hadn't addressed which is yes i think connection is like the fundamental I don't want to say savior, but I think without that, none of the other solutions really are going to work as well.

Eva MinkoffGUEST
However, I didn't explain what connection could really look like without it taking from you.

So Eva, in the exam room, can you give us a scenario where that framework can play out so we can get a better picture of what that may look like?

Eva MinkoffGUEST
People find that really surprising because they think that they're the decision makers.
