Euro 4

The standard to qualify as a low emissions vehicle, not even particularly onerous.

You just have to be able to meet the Euro 4 emission standards or higher.

So Euro 4 was introduced in 2005.

Example of cars that are perfectly Euro 4 compliant are Volkswagen Golfs, Ford Fiestas, Honda Civics, if they're from 2005 onwards.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class, that's the diesel one.

Audi A3s, Ford Focuses, Peugeot 308s, Renault Meganes.

So update to Euro 6 is a minimum update that South Africa should look at.

But because of our fuel quality, I think the cleanest we can probably go to is Euro 3 or Euro 4.

And the reason is if the fuel quality is not suitable for Euro 6 technology, it can actually damage your vehicle.

So that's why OEMs are reluctant to bring cleaner vehicles into the South African market until there's certainty that we have the correct type of fuel that won't damage those vehicles.
