Dr. Conrad, how can we be using interictal EEG to better meet our needs in terms of accelerating treatment of epilepsy?
E

The interictal EEG is a nice opportunity because it's a measure of seizure risk that can be measured at any time and seems to change as the seizure risk changes.

And so you can use it if you want to know, is this medication that I'm starting for a patient going to help their seizures or not? And so could you start the medication and then check an EEG in a week and see if a feature of their seizure risk, like their interictal spikes, goes down? That suggests that you're on the right track.

And is this something we can now do at the bedside or do we need to have machine algorithms to read these EEGs for us?
E

And if you use something like interictal spikes, that you could just look at that by eye.

And so that's where you would need to have either ambulatory recordings or continuous recording devices.
