What was the original vision for how much of the basketball story would be told and who came to whom deciding to tell that story?
6:14
Neither Matt nor I knew a lot about the program when we first came in.
6:19
We really sort of relished the challenge, though, of telling a story that was not just for fans of the game or fans of the UConn Escus program, but that people could really enjoy and relate to universally.
6:34
So we sort of saw our positioning not as experts in this realm of the Yukon Women's Huskies as an advantage.
6:45
You know, we were telling 40 years of the dynasty in less than two hours.
6:51
So there were a lot of choices to make.
6:53
So we sort of used that principle as our North Star of how to tell the story.
10:46
How did you handle that sort of what people assume and know about him versus maybe what you were actually getting on tape?
DerekHOST
4:06
How'd your perspectives change on him, um, or did they at all? I mean, d- from start to finish, did your, your thoughts on him change, or was it kind of the same all the way through? Again, either one of you.
4:18
For me, the m- the more I learned about Geno, um, the more interesting he was.
4:23
He's just, he's...
4:24
There, there's so much to him, you know, from his upbringing, coming to the US from Italy as a young boy, not speaking English, wanting to prove himself.
4:35
I mean, you see that little boy in him now, you know, and still, like, wanting to prove himself and never feeling like he's, you know, done it, won it.
4:47
If he wins, he's gotta win again.
4:49
Um, so I, I think, you know, I just, I found him, the psychology of Geno incredibly fascinating and also the way he was able to really look at each individual player and figure out what he needed to do to help make them the best version of them.
DerekHOST
8:43
What, what's your take on that?
20:04
Uh, but Erika, I think you can speak to a little bit of that.
20:07
Yeah, I mean, we knew that we wanted and needed them to go deeper than maybe they had ever gone in media appearances, even documentaries, in order to get at really the human emotions and the sort of what makes them tick that we really were going for here, um, the depth.
20:29
And so, you know, it, it takes some time.
20:33
You, um, need to win their trust like you do any documentary subject, and the more time you spend, the, um, the more that trust happens, and the, the more that they will open up.
20:46
So I think, like, letting them know really where we were coming from and what we wanted to do, um, and I think they, they understood that and they wanted that as well.
20:58
So it felt very much like they were working with us.
21:02
But you know, sometimes you do have to remind them, like, you know, "We're asking you this question.
