It's kinda like you shift into first gear using your clutch pedal, and then thereafter, you just move the lever, right?

Um, so not really.

Um, most preselectors, uh, Cotel as well as the preselector in Cords, which was made by a company called Bendix, um, essentially it's a vacuum-powered, uh, transmission mechanism where your gear was preselected using a switch gear.

In a Cotel, it looked kind of like a, nearly a half a plate with a lever along the side of the steering wheel that would move up and down to shift through the gears.

Uh, on a Cord, it looks like a little teeny gated shifter.

What would essentially happen is you would select the gear you want And then when you wanted to actually shift, whether up or down didn't matter, you would-- nothing would happen until you pressed the clutch, and the clutch was the activator for that hydraulic, the vacuum-assisted hydraulic pump that would then push the car into the next gear.

In Cotelle's instance, the reason that was used was, especially on French racing cars, was because you had moved the transmission from the floor with a lever that you had to take your hand all the way off the steering wheel and move it down to shift, to a place where you could shift with your finger, keeping both hands on the steering wheel the entire time.
