Annie YaoHOST
How would you say those relationships, like your experiences with those relationships, shape the way that you train mentees?

Eric D. GaierGUEST
Well, I, I actually have to go back even to my medical school days at, uh, at UConn, and the research I had done until that point was really just basic science research.

Eric D. GaierGUEST
But knowing that I was going to pursue ophthalmology and my, my neuroplasticity thesis work was not related to ophthalmology or to the visual system in any way really.

Eric D. GaierGUEST
So I knew I needed some sort of clinical research project, um, that would set me up for success in applying for the match.

Eric D. GaierGUEST
So actually, I, I connected with Janey Wiggs, who's a clinician scientist at Mass Eye and Ear, uh, a genetics and glaucoma researcher.

Eric D. GaierGUEST
And she offered me, as part of an extended rotation, offered me a project, uh, studying hereditary optic neuropathies.
