But Emily, what is your history with The Secret Garden? And you have this passion for this, and I love it, and I wanna hear all about it

Emily ClarkGUEST
itWell, The Secret Garden is a novel, uh, a, that is widely beloved, uh, amongst little, little girls, um, little white girls especially.

Emily ClarkGUEST
But I think a lot of young women have read it, uh, at some point in their lives.

Emily ClarkGUEST
Um, it was, you know, kind of on the cusp of what we would think of as, um, young adult, you know, reading or novels for kids.

Emily ClarkGUEST
Um, but the book itself, it is an interesting read when you read it as an adult because it, it, it does fall to that kind of it was released in chunks, so it has a bit of an episodic nature to it.

Emily ClarkGUEST
Um, but one of the weirdest things about that novel is that it basically loses interest in its protagonist about halfway through.

And, um, specifically, we're talking in a broad level, um, I'm really curious, like, what do you feel people are missing about this? Um, my interpretation is that female directors and female creative teams really focus on the detail work, and I feel like this musical is something that will only work if you focus on the details of it, as opposed to, like, the broad, big-picture kind of razzle dazzle that I find a lot of male theater directors have, your Michael Greifs of the world.
