When you think about you've been working very closely with patient advocacy groups, how did you get started on this important work and why is it so meaningful to you?

Emily BeardGUEST
It was neat for me to kind of, you know, I think just for me to have a chance to kind of think about the answer to that question.

Emily BeardGUEST
I think we're so fortunate in breast cancer to have organizations that have kind of risen to the occasion and come in to fill the needs of these individual groups that we've talked about.

Emily BeardGUEST
So the ones, too, that I'm really focused on and have been really involved in are Our Young Survival Coalition and Living Beyond Breast Cancer.

Emily BeardGUEST
And both of those organizations I got started helping with or working as a volunteer with advocacy.

Emily BeardGUEST
But, um, you know, I do think about one, um, one person in particular who is, you know, a young woman who was diagnosed in her 30s, and she was planning a wedding, and that her, um, treatment was really, you know, just something she was focused on.

Emily BeardGUEST
Her mother, her, um, her fiance were with her in the appointments, and they seemed supportive, and everything seemed to be, you know, going as it should, and then her kind of eyes would gl- glaze over, and I sort of noticed, you know, that there was almost like she was dissociating a little bit, like, what, what's happening here? And then she didn't show up for her chemo teaching appointment, and it was like, okay, this is a young woman with an aggressive, you know, disease.
