6:39
How do those, how do their patterns differ?
6:41
Okay.
6:42
Okay.
6:43
The first thing is I'll have a patient that just has venous insufficiency.
6:50
And frequently, you will see a lot of spider veins and a lot of varicose veins, and they may have one to one and a half veins impacted when you do their ultrasound.
7:05
And so their symptoms are the same as the symptoms of lipedema and it's pain, heaviness, achiness, swelling, worse at the end of the day.
7:14
Patients will tell you all the time that they just want, they put their legs up and they feel better.

Like when you're going to look for a vascular surgeon, they're all going to tell you need way more veins treated than you need to have treated.
6:43
Dr. Derrick, can you describe what a typical patient looks like when they come into your office and what they're struggling with?
6:50
Oh, sure.
6:51
For any patients that are listening today, I just want you to know the first thing is that it's a privilege.
6:59
It is an incredible privilege when you come to my office, when you email me, when you connect on Facebook or Instagram or TikTok, because when patients come to discuss lipedema, they are bringing with them so much that they've carried from the medical system ignoring them and calling them fat, from their friends and family with various nicknames.
7:27
They're frustrated and really done with diet and exercise.
7:33
And so the first thing is they are very honest and straightforward about their journey.
7:40
And many patients have found this on social media, which is terrific, because often social media is criticized, but in this case, they'll say things like, "I saw my legs on TikTok," or, "I saw my legs on Instagram, and I've, you know, been following some people, and I think it might explain my health journey with my arms and my legs." And that's often where it starts.
