Elisa

1:30
[chuckles] So what's your, your take on it?
ElisaGUEST
1:33
I think in a perfect world it could look like that, right? Like, if everybody knew their dogs and all the dogs were friendly, like, in a good world, like, it would be like that, and dogs made friends, they get to keep going, and some dogs you meet, some dogs you don't, and you keep going.
ElisaGUEST
1:47
Um, socializing our dogs in today's world is really hard.
ElisaGUEST
1:52
Uh, I have a puppy right now.
ElisaGUEST
1:54
Well, she's 10 months, so she's kind of, you know, graduating out of that puppy stage.
ElisaGUEST
1:58
But it's really hard to work on socialization, because I, I have my network, right? The stuff that happens at my house, the stuff I do with my clients, but then dogs are smart.
ElisaGUEST
2:09
They start to see that as their bubble, right? And they're like, "In this environment, looks like this, it's fine.

27 MINS LATER

29:43
Yep.
3:41
Tell me.
ElisaGUEST
3:42
Uh, yeah, because I'm a millennial and, uh, you know, back then we had these, uh, boombox.
ElisaGUEST
3:52
I think, you know, I don't know if it's the, uh, proper name, uh, those portable music players that in- that include, uh, uh, both a radio and cassette, uh, a cassette player.
ElisaGUEST
4:05
So, um, uh, I used to wait for my favorite English songs to be played, uh, [laughs] on the radio, and I would, uh, record them on my cassette tapes.
ElisaGUEST
4:17
And, um, a- and, and I, and I, you know, I was, um, creating my personal, uh, my personal playlist, uh, because, you know, there were no, there was no streaming back then.
ElisaGUEST
4:30
So you had to wait if you wanted to listen to your favorite song.
ElisaGUEST
4:33
Actually, you had to wait for, for many things back then, but [laughs] that's another story.

34 MINS LATER

38:53
And this is, like, how we grow as individuals, where we don't let those things, you know, when we don't operate from these emotions, but from where we want to be and who we want to become.
23:41
Staten Grubbert might want to stay quiet, but the news of his arrest travels quickly.
ElisaGUEST
23:47
I can't remember who called me, but I know I got a call f- I think it was either my mom or my dad.
ElisaGUEST
23:53
Um, I remember it was early in the morning.
ElisaGUEST
23:56
My mom was talking to his wife's family and getting information from them, and I was trying to convey everything to my dad.
ElisaGUEST
24:06
It was just an absolute whirlwind.
ElisaGUEST
24:09
So that f- that first call, I just remember thatThey said he was arrested.
ElisaGUEST
24:17
It was really bad.

6 MINS LATER

29:51
He listens to her and believes her, so Alisa begins to write an email to her whole family outlining the charges against her brother.
27:07
Elisa is trying to maintain distance from her family, but it's not always easy.
ElisaGUEST
27:12
I mean, our, our contact was limited.
ElisaGUEST
27:14
I maybe saw him three or four times a year, if even that sometimes.
ElisaGUEST
27:19
So there wasn't a whole lot there.
ElisaGUEST
27:23
I think I started to feel more pressure for those relationships and those connections because of my mom and because she was kind of more of a part of my life at that point.
ElisaGUEST
27:34
But I mean, I, I know that there were probably red flags.
ElisaGUEST
27:37
If I thought somebody would s- have seen it, it would be my mom.
27:43
However, Elisa's mom is no longer the main person in her brother's life.
36:52
[phone beeping] Here we go
ElisaGUEST
36:52
go[phone ringing] Hello?
39:01
But yeah, can we bring it back to Isaac? 'Cause the whole reason that we're calling is he thought he'd be hearing back from you by this point after you returned from your trip, but he hasn't heard anything.
ElisaGUEST
39:11
Well, now that I'm back, things just, I don't know, seem different.
ElisaGUEST
39:15
Like, I guess I didn't realize that there were just so many generous people out there like that.
20:55
They got married, and she soon became pregnant, and after years of barely seeing her mother, the news of her pregnancy changed things.
ElisaGUEST
21:05
So for a long time, it had just been, you know, my relationship with them had been kind of, uh, not even strained.
ElisaGUEST
21:12
It just wasn't really there, you know? It was I see you occasionally, and that's that.
ElisaGUEST
21:17
So I guess when I found out I was pregnant and I think my mom kind of felt like that was a good time to come back around, so she just started doing things like offering help.
ElisaGUEST
21:30
Like, "I can come over and help you do this or that around your house," and, "I could buy you this for the baby." And I think we were just tired and trying to get ready to become new parents, and it felt nice to have somebody offering help, and so we accepted, but that was kind of like a foot in the door.
21:51
Allowing her mother back into her life felt like a huge step for Alisa, and becoming a mother was dredging up a lot of uncomfortable feelings from her past.
ElisaGUEST
22:03
So during my pregnancy, you go to the doctor a lot.
ElisaGUEST
22:06
You go through appointments that you don't typically have to go through.
10:34
Elisa and her family moved further out into Texas Hill Country.
ElisaGUEST
10:39
I had other friends who had older brothers, and I remember when I started to realize that, like, they felt like their older brothers would protect them, and that's not what I felt.
ElisaGUEST
10:50
Um, most of my friends had older brothers.
ElisaGUEST
10:54
I, I don't think it was until then that I really realized that, like, most young girls who have that older brother role, like, you know, if somebody's giving them a hard time or teasing them, you know, their brother would step in and say, "Uh-uh, don't do that to my little sister." That's kind of the normal dynamic, and I just didn't have that.
11:21
She doesn't want to talk about the details of the abuse, just that it began when she was four and Staton was eight.
ElisaGUEST
11:35
He followed a lot of the typical signs of, you know, what predators do.
ElisaGUEST
11:40
And I know that's weird to say because he was also a child, but he was manipulative and threatened me not to tell.
ElisaGUEST
11:46
And, you know, I think that at one point I know that there was talk that he was told from someone at church, another kid, that he should do things to his sister because this other child was doing things to their sister.
