Rabbi Naikner.

So Sukkot is historically commemorating the journey of the Jewish people through the wilderness after leaving Egypt and the wonderful events associated with that as we make our difficult and sometimes tortured journey to the land of Israel and the next stage in Jewish history.

And we commemorate this in two ways.

The first is we move out of our houses into temporary structures, somehow reliving and re-experiencing the events of travelling in the desert where there's no stable roof over our heads, there's no proper home and house.

And in so doing, we hopefully renew and remind ourselves of the vulnerability of human existence and the understanding that we need to have that shelter and security is a gift not to be taken for granted.

No doubt themes that we'll explore more fully shortly.

I'm not talking necessarily about the unspeakable events of October the 7th and everything that's happened since then, but also if we feel a sense of conflict or personal struggle in some way.

What insights can the process of teshuva give us to help us overcome that aversion to change in a practical sense?

So let's look at the ritual of Yom Kippur and take it from there.

Central to the prayer service is vidoy, is confession.

We stand there beating our chest and saying these words, sometimes tragically not really understanding what the meaning of them is.

It's such a rich opportunity.

It's such a gift.

I feel in Yom Kippur the luckiest person in the world to have a day off work and a day off pleasure and a day off all other commitments to the best of ability and the like, just to be able to stand in shul and have a few moments of peace and a chance to think through who I am, what I am, and where I'm up to.

What guidance do you think he and other parts of our tradition give us to help prioritize wake-up calls rather than just hearing noise around us?
