What's this place like that he's going to? What's he going to encounter there? Who lives there? What's he in for?

Yeah, so it's basically the unincorporated Southwest Territory, as it's known at this time.

And Jackson arrives at the end of this very abortive project called the State of Franklin, which were a bunch of settlers out there who thought, well, we're going to start our own in a state with blackjack and hookers and all of that stuff.

And basically, they want to create a state so they can start creating policy and they can start negotiating with indigenous communities and they can start even speaking with the Spanish and the British, who, remember, are still a force here in North America, particularly the Spanish, who control so many of the trading waterways that are needed for any of these states to really prosper.

So Jackson comes in at the tail end of this, of the state of Franklin.

The U.S. central government basically shuts this down and says, this is not the way we go about creating states.

This is what later leads to the Northwest Ordinance, where we get a much clearer sense of how a territory becomes a state and part of the union from there.
