And, you know, where Drew is right now, it feels like the beginning of a whole new story.
20:15
A couple of tipping points really mattered here.
20:18
The first was there is a global public health kind of data analysis shop called the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluations.
20:30
And I forget the exact year, but around 2015, they included lead poisoning in an analysis product of theirs called the Global Burden of Disease Analysis.
20:42
The Global Burden of Disease basically looks at what killed everyone who died and what was the risk factor that led to that cause of death.
20:52
And for the first time, they included lead exposure and started vacuuming up all of the available lead data.
20:59
And the numbers were shocking immediately.

Drew, can you boil this down to just one example of a village or even a person or a family that has changed as a result of one of these solutions being applied?

So what can lead be doing in the brains of kids to allow a child to forget what grade they're in? Well, Saim's brain, like all kids' brains, is like a new city under construction.
5:59
And calcium actually plays a role like a city planner, directing crews to build synaptic roads and bridges that allow for things like learning and memory and impulse control, all these tools we need.
6:14
But when lead is in the body, it masquerades as calcium, and the brain will use the lead instead.
6:21
But lead is a terrible city planner, and it directs those crews to build dead-end streets and bridges to nowhere.
6:29
And once lead's chaotic network is built, the damage is permanent.
6:36
And Saim isn't alone.
