How did you first come across this story?

Yeah, so we got a tip a few months ago from an anonymous source who was suggesting that we look into a case of one individual officer in Georgia who had been caught misusing flock cameras to spy on a romantic partner.

We started looking at it, and that was one of the cases where actually this officer was facing criminal charges and was being prosecuted for those actions.

And we kind of got us thinking, you know... are there any more cases like that? I sent an email to my colleague saying, I wonder how many police are stalkers, because if that number is pretty high, then there potentially is going to be a large amount of abuse of this software tool.

So we kind of put our radar out.

We started looking around for other cases and pretty quickly we developed a list of, it began with about 15 cases where we could find some evidence of that.

The number kept going up 20, 30, 40, 50.

What does it say that so much of what we know about the misuse of Flock in these police departments only comes because of private citizens or journalists? Like it's not from Flock itself or police departments doing necessary auditing.

How many are there? How many people are in them, et cetera?

Yeah.

So when, uh, this president, uh, was sworn in, ah, last year, um, this country already had the largest immigrant detention system in the world.

There were about thirty-five to forty thousand people in detention already averaging per day.

However, um, President Trump said that he was going to embark on a campaign to crack down on immigration, um, to arrest more people and deport more people from this country than ever before.

Um, since then, we've seen that number roughly double.

There's close to seventy thousand people per day in detention right now all over the country in more than two hundred facilities.

Yeah

And what was the autopsy report as far as the cause of death?

So yeah, so there are three deaths in December and January one of those deaths was a man named Geraldo Lunas Campos is a 55 year old Cuban national been detained there for a few months and initially ICE puts out a press release a few days after each person in his custody dies.

They put out a press release, usually has a little bit of information about what happened to that person.

In this case, they put out a press release saying, you know, he was sent to solitary confinement and a little while later they found him unresponsive.

So really no information was given about why this person had died.

That seemed suspicious to me.

And I had a source telling me that actually this was a result of a use of force incident.

We need that bed rate cracking this year.

What is the process gonna look like for making these habitable for people?

Yeah.

I mean, these places were built to hold goods and ship goods.

They were not meant to hold human beings, so there's a pretty significant renovation process that has to go underway.

Um, and they, ICE wants it done really rapidly, so it's gonna be a challenge.

Um, for one example, a lot of these are distribution centers built for a company like Amazon, where a lot of trucks would've been pulling up to these bay, large bay doors, and so many of these facilities have dozens of bay doors around the perimeter of the building.

That's not a very secure feature if you want a detention center to hold people who are not gonna be able to escape.

And just quickly, how has the administration handled some of the pushback in some of these places?
