So what were you doing before this? Like what kind of led you on this journey?
2:24
Well I didn't set out to be involved in property or spearheading a movement, nothing like that at all, but my background's in science and so that was the track that I was on all the way up until I came to university and did a PhD here and I really did think that academia was going to be my thing.
2:42
But a couple of things happened.
2:44
One was that I learned quite early on that academia wasn't the safe, secure employment type thing that I had initially thought it would be.
2:54
There's a lot of competition when it comes to academia and there's a phrase, publish or perish.
2:59
So you're only really deemed as good as the last paper that you published and the workload is really high.
3:05
And I think that one of the key things that I learned from that time as well was a female supervisor who was in her seventies and had worked all over the world.
7:58
So did you have any idea at that point how big the problem actually was with regards to women or housing affordability in general?

19:41
Yes.
19:42
So where we are at the moment is that we are building a co-living home for six older women.
19:48
So I say we're building, I'm bringing the women together to purchase that together.
19:54
And the minimum investment for that is $5,000.
19:58
And what that means is when we bring the women together, once we found the property, each woman will have a share in the property.
20:06
So it's what's called a tenants in common way of buying a property.
20:11
So you can do joint tenants or you can do tenants in common.

But talk us through your solutions and what you see as possible.
14:03
Yeah, cool.
14:04
I set up Women for Homes 18 months ago and a bit of context, I was a consultant and I still am a consultant for firms and organisations that are looking to raise money for property projects with a focus on affordable and sustainable housing.
14:20
And so when I was going out capital raising for those kinds of projects, the minimum investment was $50,000.
14:26
And I was at an event at a retreat actually with women and it was a marketing and branding retreat.
14:33
And when I was sharing what I was doing, I had women coming up to me saying, that sounds amazing.
14:39
I'd love to get involved.
