Is that something that you saw in your career as a transit planner?
9:35
It is the bane of my existence.
9:37
I've never used that term pre-compromising, but I think, you know, what do people say on social media, like capitulating in advance? Like it's so common when it comes to things that city staff are responsible for, like things that they might not want to rise to the level of council.
9:56
So like these like little smaller decisions that city staff are always making all the time.
10:01
You know, they've been trained.
10:03
Often a lot of the people that are responsible for this stuff were trained as engineers.
10:07
And so in engineering school, you're taught to think a certain way about cars.

21:43
Can you tell us a little bit about how you fought off this huge fiscal cliff?
11:17
Uh, when you heard this, another fare hike, what was your first feeling?
11:23
Uh, you know, we've known that this is coming for about a year.
11:26
This was baked into the, uh, investment plan that boosted some of those routes you were talking about.
11:33
Uh, got us about a 5% boost in service.
11:36
Um, I have a mix of thoughts because, uh, you know, on one hand, uh, uh, fares have been kind of flat when you compare it with inflation, right? Transit costs are going up.
11:47
But then when you look at other transit agencies in North America, you see that we actually have, uh, more, uh, of the cost of running transit is covered by riders than most other cities in North America.
12:00
Uh, other, most other cities have, you know, lower fares, higher subsidies from the, from taxpayers.

... really what you want to do to people that maybe should be getting out of the car and easing congestion? I don't know.
