David Stephens uncovers the story of Captain Newfoundland

David StephensGUEST
Yeah, so actually I'll run down the history of the publication of these features.

David StephensGUEST
So, you know, your weekly comic strips in your newspapers like The Phantom or Beetle Bailey or something like that.

David StephensGUEST
So these would have appeared weekly next to syndicated strips from like King Features.

David StephensGUEST
And they would run for so long until then they were replaced with a new strip.

And here's a question I should have asked right off the bat, but after you've gone through all the work that you've done, what is your fascination with Captain Newfoundland?

And I think the discussion becomes easier and most importantly, the confidence becomes easier too.

David StephensGUEST
I mean, our technicians, when the patients come in, are used to now asking how patients are doing with their drops in a non-judgmental way.

David StephensGUEST
what issues they're having, how is their dry eye, how are they doing with using their medications and remembering.

David StephensGUEST
And that's huge because it gets the patients thinking about it in between the technician working them up and me seeing them.

David StephensGUEST
And they always come out and kind of complain that they're always giving me different answers.

David, what are some common objections you come across and how do you approach them?

O
19:50A question for you, David, in regards to how does that late pregnancy management directly affect the colostrum quality that's available for those three lambs at birth?

David StevensGUEST
So again, leaning back on some of the British research of many years ago, really.

David StevensGUEST
So both quality and quantity of colostrum are impacted if the animal is losing condition score or if she's in low condition score, right? So the ewes getting close to lambing, she's starting to mobilize her own reserves to do something.

David StevensGUEST
So if you got using condition score probably less than two and a half, you will be producing maybe 25% less colostrum.

David StevensGUEST
And if you're trying to spread that over three lambs, that's actually really significant.

Julianne PriceGUEST
How do I keep body weight on older ewes without growing the lambs too big? I don't typically have the same issues with maternal triplets.

The hard landscaping and the pools and the rock work, that's pretty much all in now.

David StevensGUEST
But thanks to Winterbourne and the students and Darren, of course, himself, we'll get it done.

David StevensGUEST
Yes, I mean, we've had some rain, obviously, and I think Thursday is going to be a real rainy day.

David StevensGUEST
I mean, as you know, these gardens, we only have about two and a half weeks to build them.

David StevensGUEST
Uh, it's a big plot, one of the biggest plots ever at the show, uh, with things like one of the largest trees that ever came into the show, which, you know, 40 feet high, uh, ginkgo, ginkgo biloba, which is a fossil tree, and that's what the garden's all about.

David StevensGUEST
So we start 450 million years ago, and you come through a almost like a mine shaft, a dark tunnel, uh, where the sea developed.

David StevensGUEST
All life came from the oceans, basically, and you walk into the Cambrian 450 million years ago when there was just rock and water.
