... and, and actually things go back well beyond that.

So I'll give the- things really started in 1989 when the guides, uh, in this area around Chaffey's Locks came to Frank Phelan, who was the manager at the biology station, and said they were really worried about the fa- quickly increasing numbers of tourists that were now fishing for nesting bass illegally during the season.

And so could we do anything about that, at least try to assess that? So we put up a proposal, um, and, and to, to do some studies, uh, which involved getting permits to snorkel and do things from the ministry, and we also interestingly got su- support, financial support for the first three years, which would've been '90, '91, and '92, maybe even into '93, I can't remember, but from, uh, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters.

And so we started monitoring Uh, four different populations, a warm river, the Mississippi, a cold river, the St. Lawrence, a really cold river, and, uh, a warm, shallow lake, which was Opinicon, and a deep, uh, colder lake, which was Charleston.

And we started that in 1990, uh, never thinking, uh, the plan was never to do this for 37 years, right? It was, that was never the thinking along these lines, but we kept going with it.

We were getting interesting information, and there's something about a long-term data set that makes it so valuable.
