WisBusiness: the Podcast with Prof. David Noyce, UW-Madison TOPS lab

Of course, there's some of these already out on the road, but do you expect that will shift to make a greater portion of the vehicles driving around anytime soon? And what's kind of the timeline ahead looking like for that?
D

First of all, we're all familiar with the number of vehicle types on the roadway that have a large part of the so-called self-driving elements built in, the Teslas, right? And I know a number of Tesla owners, especially the very new models, have a feature within the vehicles that will pretty much drive from point A to point B without any hands or foot type operation.
D

Now, we still use the word automated versus autonomous because autonomous, at least in the transportation engineering definition, means you know sitting in your car and you're communicating with your car and say take me to point whatever and the vehicle just does all the work but we're not quite there yet but the teslas and others will get you pretty close to that once you get moving and you put in a designation or destination i should say um you know how to help do all the driving for you through those environments So we are doing a number of different things to kind of bridge from where we are today to that full autonomous operation.

And the very first thing that we're working on, believe it or not, has really nothing to do with the vehicle technology, but it's simply getting people familiar with the technology and building trust.
D

The biggest barrier in getting people into autonomous vehicles and having autonomous vehicles becoming a larger proportion of our driving fleet is getting people to trust the technology.

So many things that we're doing now are simple test sites, setting up vehicles, setting up minivans, so to speak.
