But what I have seen personally, that those terms are loosely used without the meaning of it fully understood in the context.

David MarcusGUEST
We can start with, with resilience because that's part of emotional intelligence.

David MarcusGUEST
Now, obviously that's why we're here, right? Here what I have to say is for these things.

David MarcusGUEST
Resilience is the result of a child being able to cope with their own experiences and learn from them and figure out what to do next.

Now, can you share with us what have you learned about why parents and children sometimes struggle so much to understand each other?

David MarcusGUEST
I know that sounds odd, but what it actually is is the parents are assuming, silently assuming, that what they experienced when they were children is the same as what their own child is experiencing and so what they do is they say oh I know just how you feel they go into telling the child about how they went through something similar and the child just sits there and listens and the parent feels okay we've talked about I've told you what you can do and now go try it and everything's moving fine and what I have found is that that doesn't work very well.

David MarcusGUEST
Like three days later, the child is just as upset about a similar incident that happened that same day.

David MarcusGUEST
And the parent is confused because they sit there and say, well, I thought we talked about this.

David MarcusGUEST
Well, telling a child that you feel the same way and why and what they should do is not the same as helping them emotionally.

David MarcusGUEST
You know, basically it's way too logical, you know, If parenting was that logical, if our children could simply take our advice and do exactly what we say and feel a little better, well, frankly, Ferdinand, people like me would be out of a job.
