Healthcare and the NC Senate Race | Hour 1

David LarsonGUEST
So my piece is kind of looking at, well, why is that? Uh, why do we spend so much? And it, it's about 30% of our overall spending on healthcare, and, um, about half of that is, um, insurance companies administration, and the other half is providers, like hospitals and other providers.

David LarsonGUEST
So a lot of it is just that, you know, there's a bunch of administrators, uh, on the insurance side, a bunch on the, uh, provider side that are kind of debating each other, um, negotiating with each other about what any given service should, should cost at any given time [laughs] and place.

David LarsonGUEST
So y- you know, the, um, and kind of the image I use for it is just, like, imagining you're at a restaurant and it works that way, where everybody has different, um, insurance cards, food insurance cards, and you go in and order a steak dinner.

David LarsonGUEST
And one person at the table, they have one price for it based on the negotiated rate, and, uh, somebody else has a different price.

I mean, you've got little kids, you know, can you picture not knowing where they are in the middle of the night, you know, 10 years from now?

David LarsonGUEST
I mean, back in our day where we could call one person and say, or one person at a time, say meet over there and you could get a big gathering of teenagers, but it could only probably grow so big.

David LarsonGUEST
Now they have these apps where, you know, within a minute, everybody sees, It's like a perfect storm for organizing rowdy youth.

David LarsonGUEST
They can post, oh, we're all at Briar Creek, 3,000 people, but we're heading to Glenwood South, and then 5,000 more come.
6 MINS LATER

Donna KingHOST
Are those concerns or do you think this is something we may see either overridden and corrected later in another bill?
