Dave, what does a song need for you, for you to know that it's worth recording? I mean, when, when, when you're attacking a song, what, what comes for- Does, is it lyrics or music that comes first for you?
29:15
So if, if you start recording a song or something that's gonna be a song before the lyrics are there, it's, it's a, it's a harder, rockier, longer road.
29:26
And I've done that.
29:28
I did that with my 2019 solo album, Monomania, which was just an album of vibes and grooves and track, you know, play- playing, like, drum beats, uh, onto the phone and then layering in samples and, and then basslines and then kind of going, "Oh, that sounds like a verse.
29:43
That sounds like a chorus." And then going, "Right, now I have to write a song around this," which is just so hard, [laughs] you know? Trying to crowbar a song in.
29:51
So that's a, a really fun way of putting stuff together.
29:54
You know, it's a really creative, fun way.

Tell us a bit about that.
0:26
How are things for you?
0:27
it's going great, yeah, no, it's really, I've been sitting on this for, this one for, for quite a while, because I actually went back to college, and stuff, and I said, I'm not going to try and, I'm not going to try and put an album out, until I have the course, college course finished, September 18th was the, was the day, and yeah, it's been getting lovely reviews, Tony Clayton Lee in the Times, gave it four out of five stars, and a couple of other lovely things, mentioned Dan Hegarty, and 2FM, and stuff, so, Yeah, no, it's great.
0:59
Yeah, I'm really happy to stand over it as an album of kind of vibey grooves, but then there's a depth of song in there as well, you know, like if people are more inclined to engage with, you know, lyrical meanings and, you know, what exactly a songwriter is getting off their chest, well, that's there as well, if you choose to go beyond the grooves and the kind of the layers.
1:28
Coma Raby, yeah.
1:29
Coma Raby.
4:09
Yeah.
4:09
They like to run things.
4:10
It's a tight ship, run things on time.
2:26
chord thrown
2:26
in there as well.
2:27
Relative minor.
2:28
I just I just started learning songs from kind of a.
2:32
Listening to my parents' record collection, it was very much a kind of a folky background.
2:38
A lot of harmony led music.
2:39
I was a big fan of, as I still am, a big fan of melody and strong melody and polarizing lyrics really that paint a very vivid picture.
7:13
Is there a story behind it for you or can people look at it in different ways?
5:04
There's no laptops and recording
5:07
vocals in a bedroom.
5:09
Exactly.
5:09
Yeah.
5:10
Which is, it's amazing to be able to do.
5:12
That's how I make my albums now, my solo albums at home.
5:18
But there's a lot to be said for, like the album that Belex just made, which is coming out in November, Good Bones.
