Right.

And when we can take it and give it profile and raise money at the same time, that's a very, very powerful thing to be able to do.
5:12
For, for me, the proudest moments in terms of Elton or the foundation is the advocacy work.
5:17
So Elton's addressing Congress and Senate and also the behind-the-scenes work that we all did, meeting members of the US government, you know, ultimately resulted in President Bush creating PEPFAR, which, without question, changed the entire trajectory of how we were able to fight this pandemic.
5:34
And we worked closely with the Clinton Foundation on a number of different initiatives, but in this particular case, President Clinton got the antiretroviral drugs produced by generic companies even though they were still in patent so that they were affordable in parts of the development world, so we could get more medicines to more people.
5:51
Right.
5:52
It was like collapsing those high drug prices at that time when it was crucial, and then the PEPFAR funding and the Global Fund Against AIDS, uh, TB, and Malaria all putting the infrastructures in place that allowed those medicines to get distributed.

I remember going to AfricaUh, and driving, you know, way out into rural areas and into villages, and, and we couldn't offer them anything other than love -
5:31
Yeah
5:31
... for their support, um, in this initiative, because visibility, uh, is, is so important now, and we need role models, and we need to continue to give people hope in these challenging times.
6:25
Yeah
6:25
... we're fighting against s- you know, stigma.
6:29
There is a scary, scary, uh, what feels like we're going backwards.
6:34
We can never take the progress that we've made for granted, and we can never take our foot off the accelerator.
