Are Minor Prophets Becoming Cessationists?

You know, 'cause that is the continuationist position, is it is possible for someone to give a prophetic word in a church meeting, for that to then be tested by the revelation of scripture, and if there is nothing contrary, then the, it is up to the person's conscience, their, their faith in order to say, "This bears witness with my conscience.

David FishGUEST
I will therefore receive this word, and I will act accordingly." And so the same thing happens, by the way.

David FishGUEST
Uh, Jerome, uh, who of course is a, is a Latin, uh, father from the, the fourth century.

David FishGUEST
The, the, he's the one who translated the, the Bible into Latin, what we now call the Vulgate, and Jerome has a friend named Marcelina.

David FishGUEST
Marcelina writes to him, and she has a friend who's trying to get her to join the Montanists.

And I think, you know, that it's the famous bill quote, right? Most Christians have more faith in the devil's ability to deceive them than the Holy Spirit's ability to keep them in truth.

David FishGUEST
Now, that could be true of some people, right? The issue I think that pastors sometimes have, and this is particularly at Bethel, that's not the problem that Bethel people have.

David FishGUEST
So as a pastor, I don't get in front of like, for example, I'm not going to get deep into politics, but like the county that I pastor in is the most deep red Republican county in the entire United States, over 100000 people.

David FishGUEST
So as a pastor, it's actually irresponsible of me to get up and rebuke the idols of the other side every week.

Um, David, can you tell us a little bit about your research into church history on this topic?

David FishGUEST
And I, I wouldn't claim to have done an exhaustive, you know, study of all the church fathers, uh, on this, but, but what I wanna point out is there's an interesting convergence here often.

David FishGUEST
When you look at guys like Creflo Dollar and, uh, Jerry Savelle, and people in the Word of Faith movement, there's a, a, a marrying of hyper-grace theology with the Word of Faith, and it all kind of goes together.

David FishGUEST
Because one of the things I can say pretty confidently is that for the church fathers, they would view the idea of decree and declaring as incredibly presumptuous.

David FishGUEST
Because whether you agree with them or not, they had quite a high view of the sinfulness of humans.

David FishGUEST
And so it, it, when you read their writings, they, they would probably just say, like, how, how dare you presume as a sinner to come before God and demand things of Him? [laughs] That's the way they would probably see it.

Suddenly, my ability to actually have trust in God, which is the definition of faith, by the way, [chuckles] completely disappears, and, uh, that's a dangerous place for us.

So, you know, I just thought, "Well, there must be something wrong with me." Um, so then after college, as was common, somewhat common, back in the day, I decided to explore Zen by, uh, uh, entering a Zen center in Berkeley, California.

David FishGUEST
This was in Berkeley, California, right? And it was, uh, founded and directed by a renowned Korean zest- Zen master, Seung Sahn, right, who was one of the first to bring Zen, uh, to the United States, right, in, in a real true form.

David FishGUEST
And, uh, uh, you know, in studying with Seung Sahn, he had this all, you know, uh, y- you know, this very useful precept that he applied to just about anything and everything.

David FishGUEST
You know, you'd- we'd also get the, you know, what's the sound of one hand clapping, the, those sorts of koans.

David FishGUEST
But often his response or his precept to w- to us was, "Only go straight, keep don't know mind." Right? And so, you know, uh, you, you got, you learn to apply that to whatever ailed you, you know?

If we take an aeroplane, the really critical things that are keeping that plane in the air.

David FishGUEST
If you want to know, um, whether or not what you actually heard was accurate or not, right? That Brian thinks that we become the equal of Jesus, go watch our video, our collaboration we did with, uh, Remnant Radio.

David FishGUEST
This is actually his core message, that in the end times, this is what we might call like latter reign manifested sons of God theology, the church becomes Christ.

David FishGUEST
So why is it so important? One, notice again, this is the theme of the episode, folks.

And then we're going to look at, sadly, there are at least three to four, probably more, major charismatic ministries that are basing doctrine off of this footnote.

David FishGUEST
It says in John 14, And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Savior.

Now that's already problematic for a lot of theological reasons, even if that were actually what the Aramaic says.

Okay, so when I was in dental school, I'm taught by these old timers that they're putting pins.

David FishGUEST
So if a tooth is severely broken and there's a big chunk missing and you're trying to replace it with a large filling, These guys – there was a technique where you would actually put a little tiny threaded pin into the tooth structure and then surround it.

David FishGUEST
So that was like rebar to reinforcing a filling so it would hold up a little bit better.

David FishGUEST
But I mean I don't know – anything about dentistry I'm being taught I'm a student but I'm I'm watching these old timers put pins in vital teeth and saying this can't be good there's gotta be a better way of doing this and but this is the way they were taught so this is what they're teaching me and you know um and and that whole you we just don't put pins in vital teeth anymore you know or or anesthesia These old timers were using, they were like the needles as big as harpoons and just going in and going fast and just people, you know, it's just so uncomfortable.
