Ollie NeasHOST
David, can you share a bit with us about the tools that the DSA has and is able to use to hold DSA or affiliated politicians to account once they make it into office?

David DuhaldeGUEST
This is a perennial question that I'm sure socialists in your country have grappled with two for over the centuries.

David DuhaldeGUEST
And one of the, my magnum opus that I published recently was the long reroute where I kind of look, I looked at the socialist party of a hundred years ago compared to the new DSA to kind of make one of them in my main historical argument was that it's, it's kind of, we've actually gone back to the old model and people are like, this is totally new.

David DuhaldeGUEST
I was like, actually, and one of the things I talk about is like people fighting about accountability and that there was very different views about what elected should do in the socialist party and in DS and this, and they, those fights echo completely in DSA where some people said like, All they're supposed to do is once you're elected is to do what the party says, the party will decide, and then you'll see it through.

David DuhaldeGUEST
So who are the most effective legislators ultimately? are those who work with what are called socials and office committees.

Can you help us understand at a high level what the history of the DSA is and what's led it to taking the particular form it does now?

So the story, and I think what Fabian Holt does a great job of, is saying that there's no one singular cause.

David DuhaldeGUEST
But if there was a singular cause that we're going to be cheeky about it, it's like the resistance to neoliberalism.

David DuhaldeGUEST
And that might sound overly educated and obnoxious, but really what we're going to get in this conversation is like, Politics has changed because of the failure of mainstream parties to deal with the Great Recession.

David DuhaldeGUEST
I'm talking about globally, that they implemented austerity, and there's been responses that have both created fascistic responses like MAGA.

David DuhaldeGUEST
The Tea Party and Social Democratic and Democratic Socialist Responses, which we kind of see in the Bernie movement, AOC on people who want to reify them to people, and then Democratic Socialist America, I think is the most successful kind of organization there.

David DuhaldeGUEST
And I was thinking about when I was rereading my review of the book, which I do recommend everyone get the book, who was interested in DSA or even just because it's really helpful.

But, you know, to to bring us back to talking about DSA and New York City and Zoran, can you can you talk about how DSA and New York City DSA that that chapter sort of positioned itself as a quasi party that is sort of interacting with the Democratic Party, quote unquote, but not, you know, being, you know, fully of it?
