... and, you know, his family, and I think that this was just not talked enough a- a- about what it did to the family and, and the grief they were already living with when they started all of this.

Dave WedgeGUEST
That's part of why I wrote the book the way I did, Matt, because I think that he was lost in all the, um, you know, tabloid and circus nonsense that, you know, became the Karen Read case.

Dave WedgeGUEST
And the family always said, "Why isn't it the John O'Keefe case? He's the one that lost his life." Became all about Karen Read, and Karen Read was framed, and if this can happen to her, what's gonna happen to the lady down the street or the, you know, the single mom in, in Mattapan? You know, the, the justice system is broken, and they're, you know, persecuting an innocent woman.

Dave WedgeGUEST
So it became all about that, and John O'Keefe and his life was kinda forgotten in all that.

Dave WedgeGUEST
So when I was writing this book, uh, you know, again, this is my eighth book, and I was a journalist for 20 years.

Dave WedgeGUEST
So I've always tried to keep the victims of all the stories that I write in mind and be sensitive to what happened to them, and their families are the ones that were impacted the most, no matter what anybody else wants to think.

Dave WedgeGUEST
We're here on the 25th anniversary of 9/11 today, and, you know, when I covered that, I, I, I covered it about the people.

Hilary McGannHOST
And having done all the research you did, is your conclusion that this is a corrupt case?

Dave WedgeGUEST
You know, as you mentioned, Michael Proctor, the state trooper who was the lead investigator in the case, you know, probably should have recused himself.

Hilary McGannHOST
And I want to get into obviously who that is, but I think he made a very, very good point, which is that this should have been a hit and run incident and you'd argue actually had that been the case had they never brought these murder charges against karen reed there would have never been this depth of investigation against you know alternative theories as to what actually happened here it would never have spiraled into this um this case and um i just would love to know your thought on that do you think that they over over egged the charges

Wedge maintains the couple had a fiery relationship, and that O'Keefe had talked about ending the relationship.

Dave WedgeGUEST
They weren't really getting along great, and, uh, John O'Keefe wasn't really happy in the relationship.

Dave WedgeGUEST
There was an incident when they were down on Cape Cod and they had a pretty bad fight, and they had to be separated at one point because they were, they were both so heated.

Dave WedgeGUEST
This has really become the Karen Read case when it should be the John O'Keefe case.

Dave WedgeGUEST
Behind it all is this, really from all my research, a, a real saint of a guy, John O'Keefe, who lost his life, and his family is still searching for justice.
