Dave Altmeyer

5:42
They aren't sure.
5:44
So what would you say to calm their emotion? So here's the thing.
5:49
Elections come and go, but your retirement plan is long term.
5:55
So history shows markets have operated under both parties.
6:00
I'm just talking as an economist, not Dave Altmeyer from the political standpoint.
6:04
Sure, sure.
6:05
So retire – but here's the thing.

50 MINS LATER

56:09
We'll let you take us home on another award-winning edition of Altmire Financial Radio.
22:23
So let's talk about how much the difference in timing alone can really make.
22:29
Sure.
22:29
So the same $100,000 of conversion that costs $24,000 in a normal year, that can cost $32,000 in a high income year.
22:41
So $8,000 more from timing alone.
22:45
That's one consideration.
22:47
Now, pacing...
22:50
Does matter.

17 MINS LATER

39:37
It's
20:37
So for women starting over after a divorce in, let's say, 50, 55, 60, where does the rebuilding actually begin?
20:50
Well, first they can claim what's their share.
20:53
So nearly one third of divorcing women never claim any share of the spouse's 401k or pension.
21:01
So here's what's kind of happened.
21:04
Generally speaking, the main breadwinner, and sometimes that can be women.
21:09
Sure.
21:11
They end up saving more because just... do the math.
24:40
Is that fair? Yeah.
speaker_1NARRATOR
54:53
purposes.
54:55
The other thing is – Like your dad, we get a lot of people in from companies that give them a pension option when they retire, like there's a big utility local company.
55:10
And so what they're going to do is they say, hey, you can either take this annuity income.
55:18
That's what they call it.
55:20
And you have a steady stream of income or you can take this lump sum.
55:24
So.
55:26
The problem with the annuity income is if you die five years down the road, you just lost your – all that lump sum.
56:22
Dave, we'll let you take us home on another award-winning edition of Altmyer Financial Radio.
24:05
How do people miss this distinction that there is a difference between what you do and what somebody else does?
24:12
Well, I can tell you this.
24:14
None of those will run a plan like we do where it shows taking income out of your portfolio and different – social security if you got a pension or whatever, how much you're taking out of your investment portfolio.
24:28
And that's the thing because they're going to say, oh, you're going to pull out 6 percent, but that's great because you're going to make 12 percent.
24:37
So you put that all together and you're going to be OK.
24:41
But – You brought up earlier sequence of returns.
24:45
So if you have a market correction early on, that sets that whole plan backwards eventually.

23 MINS LATER

48:09
So she's wondering what kind of plan should someone in her position, late 60s, single, no kids to rely on, what should she be doing differently than somebody who's married? Okay, so
21:40
What the difference between tax preparation and real tax efficient strategies is a key component of what you guys do.
21:50
Yeah.
21:51
So tax preparation looks through the rearview mirror.
21:58
Your CPA is a historian.
22:01
So it records what already happened when almost nothing can be changed.
22:07
So this is what I mean.
22:12
There's a tax strategy that I became aware of.

5 MINS LATER

27:21
How do you help them see what forward-looking planning can add to their plan?
7:00
Dave, how does this debt connect with inflation? Because we obviously understand there's a correlation there.
7:07
Yeah.
7:08
So here's what happens.
7:10
There's more national debt.
7:12
And so people that buy government bonds, treasuries, whatever, what they're saying is you have this huge debt problem that you keep borrowing money and you're at a higher risk.
7:25
So I want a higher rate of return.
7:29
So you're looking at like 30-year, you know, treasuries like at 5%.

12 MINS LATER

19:15
What exactly is a bridge to retirement? Can you paint that picture?
16:55
Yes.
16:55
And that's how we we actually can put a number to it.
16:59
Some like Dave Ramsey will say, hey, if you're not going to touch the money for 10 years, a Roth makes sense, which maybe it really maybe it probably does.
17:11
But here's the thing that we found out over the years is you can go in and you can talk about it philosophically with people.
17:20
But you really don't know.
17:23
And so what the Roth integration does, you know, we'll have a CPA involved with it, too, for people that want to study a little deeper.
17:32
But it's going to tell you, like, if one of you lives to age 90, how much it's going to save.

22 MINS LATER

39:13
Yeah, kind of blown away, right? Yeah,
