When you look at what you're trying to do, How much more is needed to accomplish that mission given the reality of this province?
8:33
What we're doing to try to alleviate stress for single-parent families, though it's very important, it's a very small piece of the puzzle.
8:42
So we're providing just some of those essentials, your exercise books, your pencils, your pens, a variety of things that all kids need heading into the school year.
8:54
It's definitely a help to the single-parent families that we serve, but it's far from the solution.
9:00
Every year, the cost of these supplies continue to increase, and that's due to inflation, cost of living, and not just felt here in Newfoundland and Labrador, but really across the entire country.
9:12
But one thing that's really being felt here in our province in particular is is the actual school supply list that parents are being faced with.
9:20
So you could actually be, you could have kids in the same school, even grade three, different classrooms, and they have different school supply lists.

9 MINS LATER

When you are someone like Danielle Seward who looks at family situations as well as the big picture, some solutions don't seem that hard.
20:03
Is there a lag or is it just the transition automatically happens very quickly?
20:10
It's very quick.
20:12
I would almost argue that we've started to see that in the last couple weeks as well.
20:19
This year in particular, even just new families that have had to use the food bank that they've never had to before.
20:27
We've had more again this week.
20:28
We're actually up to 63 families that have become new clients of our food bank since January 1st that have never used a food bank before.
20:37
And that represents 96 children under the age of 17.
21:23
But is there a better system we can design, or is this the system? When school closes, it's up to the food banks whether they design themselves to be this way or not to provide the support.
