um but look let's talk about musk this was such an enormous assignment the film runs for nearly four hours and moves from aspiration and invention into power and damage and political influence how did you find a musical structure capable of carrying that entire journey um yeah it
0:51
was it was difficult i mean i went in with an approach that was more technological based and um You know, my kind of reading of this story is, you know, I find it quite a dark story in a way, like in terms of of this sort of person who promises this optimistic, aspirational future, but delivers, on the other hand, the complete opposite.
1:21
And but, you know, so I started off writing quite a lot of like quite I think, quite dark electronic music.
1:29
But Alex Gibney, who I think is an amazing, fearless director, was like, this is an even handed film.
1:37
Even though Elon calls it a hit job, Alex went out to make a film about Elon and the story follows where Elon goes.
1:46
And at the beginning, you forget this kind of guy who was sort of very aspirational and optimistic.
1:55
And there's a sort of lovable sort of nerdy dorkiness to him that we can all relate to.

6 MINS LATER

8:00
What did you want the song to represent after everything that we had just witnessed during
29:22
had him on here last week.
29:24
Yeah, a great.
29:25
Yeah, I think it's very important, you know, like people who make films that aren't afraid of of powerful structures or people and to look at them and I didn't think I could do it.
29:37
I was so busy, but I kind of felt it was a really important film he was making.
29:43
And so I wanted to be involved.
29:45
And then I kind of got really involved and I kind of really enjoyed it.
29:48
And then we kept talking about a song and I kept slightly being like, oh yeah, yeah, I've got to do that song.

13 MINS LATER

42:56
think it's 28 years later, three.
20:27
[laughs]
20:27
... things that's amazing is you very rarely get to see the artistic process of someone else working, 'cause it's such an intimate thing.
20:34
You know, I work here in my flat.
20:36
No one's around.
20:36
The reason my flat is completely messy is 'cause I can't work with someone else in the room, and I never know when it's gonna be working.
20:45
That sort of flow thing, I found it f- absolutely fascinating to see how Brian works.
20:51
Like, watching how you play the guitar and how you track things.
24:53
[laughs]
