What do you mean by this when you say that this is s- this is one of the components of your susceptibility to con artistry? What do you mean when you're using the word focus in that way?

Dan SimonsGUEST
What, what we think of as focus is that we tend to pay most attention to what's right in front of us.

Dan SimonsGUEST
And Danny Kahneman uses this phrase, "What you see is all there is." And that really is kind of the aspect of focus that's most critical.

Dan SimonsGUEST
We're not, we don't tend to think about the information that we don't have, that what, the information we're missing.

Dan SimonsGUEST
So w- we kind of open this chapter with an example of a, a stage psychic, John Edward, who uses very rapid banter and shifts around to, to cold read his audience, not using actual psychic abilities, but using standard sort of mentalism tricks.

Dan SimonsGUEST
Um, but he's so quick about it that you don't have the time to stop and ask yourself, "Oh wait, could he have just made anything, any answer fit what he just asked for?" Right? It's, it's allowing himself that opening to pick and choose what he wants to choose, but he's going fast enough that you never question what you're missing.
