Just how do you hope the guys respond this week?

Well, you know what? And here's the thing is we've got to have an edge to us.

And that's one of the things I think you're...

You know, I'm trying to figure out how we create that.

We have a lot of good guys.

You know, we have guys that love playing football.

They care.

How do you think that the defensive backfield did this week in adjusting to a high-powered offense like Hawaii's?

I think they did a great job.

Obviously, it's a totally different scheme.

Very, very different.

I think people get caught into, oh, it's a deep pass.

Very, very different schemes at how you want to throw a deep pass or what it is.

I thought, you know, the challenge against this team was how much they were going to throw the ball.

What did you think of just Scroggs' performance stepping in at center? Well,

Yeah, losing sucks, I'll tell you that.

Some critical errors, some areas we've got to be better at.

I don't want to sound too coachy in here, but...

The game's not complicated.

One of the biggest things I think the game came down to was red zone scoring, which is a huge part of plan to win.

If you look at that game, when we had several different red zone opportunities, we came up short on fourth down twice and a missed field goal in the red zone.

How much of that was Memphis adjusting or how much of that was? No, I

think it was, I mean, well, a lot of the yards were negative yards and we still had yards in the fourth quarter.

Do you find – do you guys run up against it as well? Like these teams now from these power conferences won't even give you a chance?

Yeah, well, I mean, I've made a lot of calls.

Nobody will play us.

And – And I'm like, hey, you know, you're in Vegas.

Easy to get in and out of.

We've got a great stadium.

If you're playing in Allegiant Stadium, you know, stick around, watch an NFL game on Sunday.

It sounds like from what I read, now you can confirm that like both of your guys are going to play.

Yeah.

And so what, one of the things that majorly changes, they put the clamps on self-employed people a little too hard if you ask me, but they made it really, really hard for people who are self-employed to get standard conventional loans, Fannie, Freddie, VA, FHA, all that stuff.

because they tighten up the guidelines.

You often have to have at least two years of self-employment income.

Yeah.

Anyone, uh, surprise you? Anyone flash, uh, in the scrimmage coach that you can tell us about?

I don't know.

You know, I, I...

Like, I'm, I'm the worst at that 'cause I, you know, like, I mean, I'm looking as a whole.

Like, "Hey, where, you know, where's, what's our depth chart looking like? Or how many, how many linebackers are ready to go into a game? You know, how many safeties do we have, or what corners? What's our corner rotation?" Hey, you know, I mean, hey, we have, we have, we have, like, four starters at a position.

That's good.

How are we gonna rotate those guys? We should be able to stay really fresh during the course of a game.

'Cause you had a little, you had a little critique for the receivers.

Uh, just talk about your quarterbacks and, and, and what you're planning to do out there this year.

You know what? It's, uh, we're pretty blessed.

I think, you know, a, a lot of ...

Jackson Arnold got a lot of attention, uh, in coming here this year.

You know, obviously having played in the SEC for a couple years, started a bunch of games.

And then, uh, you know, as you saw, I think a lot of people forgot that Alex was here because he was hurt last year.

Uh, he got hurt against, uh, in our second game of the season, uh, on, I think it was the, the first or second play of the game, uh, and missed the entire year.

Like how do you keep all that football straight in your head? How are you able to do that?

Uh, what was, uh, how would you describe that experience for you, what you took away from it, and how, and how different are you now, uh, back in it like you are?

You know what, Paul, I, I think it really helped.

Being away helped me.

Uh, it really helped a lot.

It not just reset me, uh, as, as a coach and, and, and all of those things, but it let me see the changes from afar and not have to live with them day in and day out.

Uh, you know, a lot of things of, of just my, even my mindset when I, uh, you know, when I was a younger coach.

Uh, and you go back, it's a different world, uh, in college football today.

Uh, what was that experience like watching a lot of your own pl- your former players, uh, really flounder, uh, under, under your successor?

I know we have plans to build an indoor, but we don't have it.

It's 120 degrees, and you can prevent having to practice at 10 o'clock at night.

It was huge.

I'm very thankful that they gave us yesterday and at least won that day an opportunity to get on there and get some really good work done.

In your eyes, is he up there with Randall Cunningham on the Mount Rushmore of UNLV football Rebels?

I think he has to be, and, and especially in today's world.

You know, I mean, it is-- I mean, you look at a guy, talk about being loyal to your program, loyal to your city.

Um, 'cause, uh, listen, I, I, I'm not gonna get on and rant and rave like some people.

Um, there were a lot of people offering him a bunch of money to leave this year [laughs] and, um, but you know what? I mean, he looked and said, "Hey, I love this program, I love the school, I love the city.

I'm, I can be developed here, and I can accomplish all my goals right here at UNLV." And I think that says a lot about it.

And I think, you know, you're, you're gonna look for a guy that potentially goes to four straight Mountain West championship games.

As well as the development of Darion Jones and Cameron Williams.

Well, I think the one thing when you look, you know, especially about Glover, you know, he had 200-yard games last year.

So it's there for us.

And as DJ continues to develop, he was banged up a lot of last season, missed most of last season with injury.

Coming back and getting into that rotation, you'd love for it to be like we had the three-man rotation last year of keeping those guys fresh and healthy throughout the year.

You'd love to be able to do it.

I think when you look at obviously the young guys and DJ coming off that injury, where they'll be, I think Jet Glove know they're they're going to get the workload.
