#109 - Dan Brunner - Commonwealth Fusion - Is fusion still 20 years away?

The key thing that we innovated that allowed CFS to do what it's doing is taking this superconductor material to make the electromagnets to confine the plasma and engineering it into high-field superconducting magnets.

And so to set a broader context, the before cfs was there uh actually let's take it slightly so we from all the research that we've done on tokamaks we know pretty well if you build it to a certain size and a certain strength of magnetic field you can predict its performance to a pretty high degree of certainty and like scientific q and all the other parameters.

And so that means that both making it bigger and making the magnetic field stronger increases the fusion performance.

And so the whole entire world's efforts were focused on ITER for many years because that was their culmination of, okay, now we'll do this to get a Q10, as they normally call it, a burning plasma when you're a Q greater than 5.

Do you think fusion is going to beat fission when it gets out the first reactor? Do you think it's going to beat fission on price?
