How much did you spend?

God, this was years ago, but I-- It was somewhere between seven and eight thousand dollars.

It, it was a significant amount, and not proud of it.

But I do have compassion for that twenty-three-year-old that did that because I think, like, we do things out of love and care that are misguided, but that misguiding is not random.

It's guided by the manipulation of the abuser.

You know, it's, it's-- I know I would never make that choice again, and I haven't.

But twenty-three-year-old me, I just, in my mind, I was trying to save the man I loved from losing everything, which, as we know, in a lot of these legal cases with domestic violence, that stack of felonies probably would've been pled down to a misdemeanor or whatever.

What were you wearing that brought that up?

As she says, "Not one bad chapter, a pattern." She told me, "It makes you wonder what's wrong with you before you ever think to wonder what was actually wrong with them." She also said, "Your show helped me understand that pattern." Welcome, Crystal, to the When Dating Hurts podcast.

I'm very excited to join this community of all the people who have bravely shared these really difficult to recount, remember, and recall their stories and, and coming on gave me, like I said, a new, brand new appreciation for how much courage it takes for all of the people who've come on your show and honored to be a, a part of that, what you're building here.

So I did find your show probably, I guess I want to say about three and a half years ago.

What...

I think one of the first episodes I listened to, your show did something to me.

I remember so distinctly I was on my way to work.

So pandemics are certainly on my radar big time.

I think it's brilliant that you brought up on the pandemic and what you already had stored away because we definitely experienced that here in the US.

You know, we had more elderly and immunocompromised.

They had their own set times to do shopping.

And when that fear happened, the civil unrest of people starting to argue in grocery stores.

We've all seen the clips.

We've all seen it.

[laughs]

Yeah.

Yeah.

I used to go a bit in, like, the mid-2000s for work, and I would do trade shows.

But I did get the chance to see a vampire-themed topless dance show, and it was called Bite, and it was incredible.

And it w- it was basically Goddess, but a little bit lower budget, and I still think about it.

I was like, "Oh, this world does exist." And, like, I'm not sure it existed at the level where, like, you would push someone down the stairs for a spot, because, like, I'm not sure things were ever really, you know, that heightened, but it is a representation of the world that is there.

And-

I mean, I'm sure there are many things that have been unsaid, but are there any other things that we feel that we have to say about this movie before we, uh, before we wrap up?

Um, so, uh, my husband and I bring my stepson and my nephew down to Gettysburg pretty much every year.

Um, it's been two years, I think, two or three years.

And this year we got to investigate the Farnsworth Inn, which is a, uh... it's a, I think it's a B&B.

Yeah

Wow

... "Okay.

Um, sure.

Uh, let's just snuggle some more." [laughs] And so that was a, kind of like the weirdest one that ever happened with her.

There was some other ones where toys would go on and off.

Uh, we would stop, like I'd take the batteries out and they'd still keep working.

So we kinda got used to that, hearing noises in the house.

Huh

Tell me what's going on.

So the climate really changed.

Like, you could see people coming together and wanting to be a part of all the vigils that are going on.

And, at the same time, people are in shock, people are mourning.

Utah, where Utah Valley C- uh, College is, State College, or- or Utah Valley University is, it used to be called Utah Valley Community College, just so we're all clear.

They did change into a university later on down the line.

It is a very safe area.

I think that was the last thing that I had.

I just love that, like, every 30 to 90 seconds in this movie, there's just something on screen where you're like, "Oh my God." [laughs] Either a costume or some special effect-
