... prepared us to do anything.

They always encouraged us to do anything you feel like you want to do.

And the- the hard part for me was figuring out what that was.

Mm.

And, you know, early on, professional sports wasn't the way it is now.

Right.

... because you saw, you didn't, you saw very few, um, role models that were, other than the people who were way up there like Ernie Banks and Gale Sayers.

What would they say or do or react?

This is- this is what it would look like.

Um, "Mom, how do you learn how to read?" And I'm four years old.

Instead of saying, "You- you put letters together," she'd say, "Here, go get a book.

I'll show you how to read." And she taught me how to read when I was four years old because I asked her, "How do you read?" And every time I asked her, "How do you do something," she stopped what she was doing and she showed me.

So then I felt...

And then she would talk about how wonderful it was that I could read or that I could tell time or that we could, uh, go around the block on our bikes by ourselves.

Hmm.

It is unfair.

And it's mean.

It's just mean.

And you know, the, I, I, I lean back on the lessons I learned from my parents a long time ago.

I wasn't worried about what anybody said who wasn't at this table.

And, um, and, and I, I coached, I, I counseled my family, my immediate family the same thing, 'cause our kids, we, our older kids were old enough to read the papers and read the, read the news and on, and things online.

But Miche always talks about this.

Mm-hmm.
