What actually has happened in terms of Pacific diplomacy over the last week?

About 10 days ago, Australia signed the Nakamal Agreement after some prolonged negotiations during Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat's visit to Canberra.

Then Anthony Albanese travelled to Fiji, where we expected him to sign the Vivali Union, which he did.

But we also got a surprise alliance.

The Ocean of Peace Alliance was also signed.

The next day, he travelled to Honiara, where he met with Prime Minister Matthew Wale of the Solomon Islands and celebrated Solomon Islands Independence Day, but also discussed the potential of a comprehensive treaty between Australia and the Solomon Islands.

It is notable and it's something that I think a lot of people have pointed out to, pointed to before that there is, that there seems to be clear economic incentives there if you can overcome these sovereignty questions.

How significant is that?

Yeah, I think that's a great step in transparency that we haven't had from previous Solomon Islands administrations.

Prime Minister Wale's comments yesterday were very candid about how difficult it was for him to even get his hands on it.

He only got it the day before he came to Australia.

But at the same time, I think it's a pretty natural move for a new Prime Minister to review a secret security arrangement that he hasn't been able to read for years.

And he also noted he'll be reviewing it alongside many other security arrangements with other countries.
