So anyways, he asked me to lie about Sherry.

And I did.

Got home, told my mom the story while he was there.

Yeah, daddy took me to the office and got us these radio control cars and for a gift for getting good grades.

And later that night we went to eat dinner for Father's Day and I just was tormented all day with thinking about all this.

Collier starts typing.

"Hi, Pop." What do I say? N- nice to talk to you? Um, [laughs] long time? Uh, I don't, [laughs] I don't really know.

Um, I mean, it's been such a, it's been a while, right? [gentle music] So now I'm analyzing what I wrote because it's my father and he might be critical of my writing.

[laughs] So now I'm like, "Oh, I'm sending it.

Let me grammatically correct this really fast." I guess some things never change.

All right, sending.

[sighs]

Neither is Collier.

The Zieglers wanted the best for Collier, but after spending his whole young life as the apple of his mother's eye, Collier found he had some adjustments to make.

It's sort of like you're, you're more than a houseguest.

And I, and I felt like their son, but like there's also this part of you that feels like you're not quite 100% there.

First couple years were awkward, for sure.

I was trying to figure out my life and just going to therapy, and then just felt like there was something wrong with me all the time.

You can hear his emotion, his confusion.

Dad, just to get this off my chest, why did you kill my mom? Don't get me wrong.

I do love you even though you have hurt me, my family, and my mother.

[gentle music] By mid-January 1990, Noreen Boyle had been missing for about two weeks, and her 11-year-old son, Collier, was desperately trying to find her.

We go to my father's office, and on the way back we stop at a gas station.

And my father used to, um, do you know what Mallo Cups are? They're like Reese cups with marshmallow in them.

He was, like, really into Mallo Cups.

And so we went into the gas station to get th- those, but he left me in the truck.

And I'm watching through the windshield, and I see him inside the gas station.

And I just start rummaging through his truck, and I open up the center console, and that's when I find two photographs.

Their knees were a few inches apart.

Not only was he a womanizer, but he was also a compulsive liar.

My father would just make up stories about everything.

I was telling on the podcast, like, I remember we went to this...

We had...

We, we had gone to this country club up on Lake Erie a- on Catawba Island, and my father was telling this story with people that we were at dinner with of how he was shot down in Vietnam over the f- South China Sea.

He was a f- naval fighter pilot flying an F-4 Phantom, shot down over the So- South China Sea.

His plane tailsp- it doesn't tailspin, but it, it, it, like, um, like, it turntables and crashes into the ocean.

After all, the story of his parents was all anyone in town had been talking about for the last few weeks, and it had finally all come to a head.
