S2E3 - Election Special
S
22:06Shu YangGUEST
So hopefully as someone use it, they can pay more attention for the races where they c- their vote can make a bigger difference, as well as giving more local candidates more visibility because oftentimes local candidates, even though they could have done a lot of great things with their track record, they don't have the budget, uh, in their campaign to market themselves on TV or in other ways, so they don't get the exposure they deserve.
22:39
I feel like you set me up nicely to say that, you know, the work that you're doing to highlight, you know, where the money is coming from and going to and who it's going to is really tricky with local elections because, I'll use the city of Waltham as an example, we were under the threshold of population for many, many years, if not the entire existence of our city, to not have to file our campaign finance reports with the state.
23:13
We only had to send them to the city clerk, and it reminded me, the process reminded me at that time of when you're filling out an expense report without a spreadsheet and you're taping, you know, receipts to the back of pieces of paper and things like that.
23:31
And for y- someone like you, um, Mr. Yang, to, you know, mine that type of data, you just, you're not gonna find it, right? And so now we go through OCPF, the Office of Campaign, uh, Finance, through Massachusetts, the state of Massachusetts, and everything is electronic.
23:51
You see it right away, and you can look up any candidate in the state, and that's kind of a game changer, I think, for our city because it shows you who self-funds, who, yeah, and who has the money to do that, right? And then it also shows you, for example, who's taking money from where.
24:15
And like you said, are they gonna do what they say they're gonna do? Well, if I take money from the local oil companies and I'm an environmentalist and I wanna push, you know, for no more fossil fuels, there's gonna be a direct conflict there.
24:31
Someone's gonna come at me saying, "You're not doing what you said you were gonna do."
