soon[gentle music] Valle Crucis is right outside of Boone, North Carolina.

It stands for the Valley of the Cross, and it is, uh, named for an intersection of a few bodies of water that come into a cross right there in the center of town.

It's very, very small.

There's not a lot of residents there full-time, but a great vacation spot.

We went there as a family, like my dad's extended side, grandma, aunts, uncles, they would all throw in once a year and rent the same property.

It was just this kind of secluded, gigantic Appalachian-style lodge, and it had, like, all these different rooms and bunk rooms, and me and my cousins loved it.

Oh.

It was a long, long battle.

He, uh, was only supposed to last a couple of months, but thankfully he lasted almost, uh, seven and a half years.

So it gave us some time to, uh, still, still have him around.

Um, during that time, uh, he gave me his train set.

It's from 19- early 1950s, I believe, or late '40s.

It was the last gift that his dad gave him, um, when my dad was nine years old, and then that same year his father diedSo he wanted to keep it obviously in the family, and passed it down to me about 10 years ago or so.

I'm so sorry that happened to you and to, to all those families.

Okay, so hit us with your crazy story.

This is during my time as an EMT.

EMTs generally, we're part of the first responder wheelhouse.

One of the other things that we do is interfacility transfers, so moving somebody from one hospital to another, just making sure that patients get the right care that they need.

So fairly early on in my career, I was working with a new partner that day.And get a call to just do a normal interfacility transfer for a, a neuro patient, which is fantastic because usually, uh, in this person's case, they're completely knocked out, sometimes completely unresponsive, right? And so it's a nice quiet drive to wherever you're going.

Yeah, and what is that transfer generally like? Someone's come in with a neurological injury, or they were already admitted and something goes wrong and they need to go to a place with more tools?

Yeah, I mean, it can completely depend.

For this individual, I think they were in home care, and it just got to be too much.

Yeah

... do you guys do screen printing for other people, too?

Yeah, man.

I just, I just noticed, man, look, this actually looks kind of suspect.

They've known each other over 40 years, back when Dad was a very different guy.

Your father had frosted hair when I first met him.

He was a fun guy and, and, uh, pretty liberal and smoked pot more than I did, and he lived with this drag queen, and so, you know, there was a, a wild kind of party atmosphere around him.

They've been living apart since the '80s, yet they've remained close, despite being political opposites.

I always take your dad in small doses.

Maybe part of the reason I don't reach out as much is because I am afraid that we get to a point where I, it would be like drawing a line in the sand and I wouldn't be able to cross it.

You know, deep down in my heart, I would love to understand it, and I don't.
